make_it_secure_002.jpgThe Department of Information Technology at Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT)  hosted the first MakeITSecure event in the Mid-West Region on Monday, 26th May from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.  The keynote speaker at this event was Eamon Ryan, T.D., Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.

 

The event, which has been organised as part of the third national security awareness campaign, MakeITSecure, aimed to provide the wider public with a greater knowledge of the importance of IT security to Ireland’s growing knowledge economy. 

 

 This national campaign complements LIT’s Department of Information Technology programmes which produce high-quality graduates with the knowledge, skills and competencies to ensure continued trust and confidence in the global IT infrastructure.

 

Monday evening we were seeing a diverse line-up of guest speakers and IT security topics discussed, including:

 

  •  Det. Inspector Paul Gillen, Head of the Computer Crime Investigation Unit, Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation – Garda experience of security breaches and the use of Digital Forensics in Garda Investigation.
  •  Mr. Michael Baume, Chief Risk Officer, Operations & Technology, AIB Group – Banking Security, including personal security and corporate data.
  •  Mr. Michael Higgins, IT Manager Dell Computers Ireland – Securing your home PC, including  fake URLs, phishing, PayPal scams, etc.
  •  Mr. Owen O’Connor – ISSA – "Cyber Crime - Myths & Misconceptions" outlining some of the false perceptions around cybercrime in Ireland.
  •  Mr. Terry Landers, Director of Government Affairs, Microsoft Ireland - The importance of IT Security to the knowledge economy and what the future holds.
